(And 3 Reasons Why You Aren’t)
So you’ve just hit submit on what feels like your millionth remote job application and you’re already thinking about how once again you probably won’t get that one either. Why can’t you land your dream remote job?
You’ve applied to remote job after remote job for the past few weeks, months, or even the past year and you still aren’t living the dream. What gives?!
Now all you have is a bunch of QUESTIONS going rampant in your head.
- Why aren’t you working from home yet?
- Why aren’t you hearing back from any of your remote job applications?
- Is working from home all one big scam and you fell right into the trap?
You are exhausted and probably nodding your head because one (or all) of these things are true. But guess what: you’re not alone.
Landing a Remote Job Isn’t Easy!
It’s also not impossible nor is it a scam when you go about it the right way. CEO and founder Esther Inman of Virtual Assistant Internship can attest to this herself having worked from home for the past seven years.
She has helped hundreds of women do the same as Virtual Assistants) and as she loves to say: she isn’t special. However, she did put in the work.
It takes work and if you are applying to remote jobs and still not getting hired there can only be 3 main reasons why. Let’s take a look at those reasons and what you can do to ensure you are well on your way to working remotely.
1. You’re Not Doing the Absolute Most to Work Remotely
Sometimes we think we’re doing enough but in actuality, we’re doing the bare minimum. It just feels like we’re doing every single thing possible. Be honest and ask yourself the question: Am I actually really doing everything I could be doing?
If you’re only applying to one job a week – that’s not enough. You’re already not doing everything you could be doing. A good number is between five and ten jobs a week and at a minimum three (if you’re doing the absolute most).
One job isn’t going to cut it! Put yourself out there – even if you have to stalk them via LinkedIn or Instagram (it’s okay some people like stalkers).
But wait maybe you are applying to ten jobs or more a week and still nothing.
Well, are you customizing your resume for each of those jobs? Or did you just apply with the same one you’ve been using for the last five years? If you did it’s probably not tailored for remote jobs. It’s 2019 – you need a killer resume.
People aren’t just applying with resumes now either especially for remote jobs. Providing samples of your work via a portfolio or even a quick Loom video of why you’re awesome and they NEED to hire you for that job can increase your chances of landing a remote job.
So ask yourself again — are you doing everything? Are you doing the absolute most? Chances are you’re not.

Esther Inman, CEO of Virtual Assistant Internship
If you’re doing all of that and then some and it’s been months of no results then let’s move on to the next reason why you aren’t working remotely.
2. You’re Applying for Every Single Job (Especially the Ones You Don’t Even Want)
You might be thinking ‘well shouldn’t I be applying for every remote job out there?’ and the answer is NO. You’re worth more than those five dollar an hour data entry jobs! Is that what you really want to do? Or a customer service job and you don’t even want to work with people or fix their problems.
Working remotely is much more than finding a job online that allows you to work from home in your Tweety Bird pj’s. It’s also about finding a job or a career that aligns with who you are and your goals of what you want to do.
Are you strategically applying for jobs that align with what you truly want to do OR are you just applying for any and every job that would allow you to work from home?
That’s not going to get you anywhere but the rabbit hole of complaining about how you can’t find a job. Each and every one of us has a purpose and every day we need to be actively seeking out to reach and fulfill that purpose.
You can’t take steps towards your purpose if all you think about is how much you need money or need to work from home. If you do this, you’ll settle for anything and apply to everything. It’s a waste of time and energy.
Be strategic in what you’re applying for to get results. Think about your goals and make sure the jobs you’re applying to align with them (and then once again stalk them on the ‘Gram).
3. You Haven’t Invested in Yourself
Remote jobs require certain skill sets and experience and some of these things aren’t always obtained from your past work experience or can transition to the virtual world.
This is why a program such as Esther’s 90 Day VA is the holy grail when it comes to providing a comprehensive program that teaches anyone who wants to be a virtual worker or virtual assistant how to do it in 90 days or less.
Even if you think you know everything or you have all the skills possible – sorry to tell you but you don’t and that’s okay.
Part of moving into a new industry such as remote work is realizing what you need help with and how to obtain that help via resources available.
You can’t keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. Instead, invest in yourself by improving your skills or obtaining new ones. Gain experience, build up a portfolio and take courses.
So what can you do today? Change your mindset. Stay positive. Don’t psych yourself out. You can do this! You can work from home.
Don’t focus on why you’re not hearing back anymore and instead focus on what you WILL do to change that. Whether it’s giving 150% effort when applying for the jobs or joining 90 Day VA, you have what it takes to work from home. Don’t give up.
